News Nick Griffin enjoying a nice pint

What’s eating Nick Griffin?

Odious blubber-mouth and foul BNP leader Nick Griffin has made a comeback to the national news this week, in spite of public demand. He has joined the ranks of fellow demented losers by becoming a Twitter hate preacher, publishing the address of a homosexual couple online and ‘allegedly’ inciting violence against them. Many media outlets have suggested that this is typical behaviour from Griffin, a habitual bigot and well-versed homophobe. However, it strikes me as a somewhat unusual move on his part.

The homosexual couple in question, Michael Black and John Morgan, are the pair who last Thursday won a discrimination case against a B&B owner who refused them a double room in her establishment. Of course, if you’re stupid enough to be offended by the thought of two gay people bunking up under your roof, perhaps opening your home to the general public isn’t the wisest of moves.

In the past, Griffin has been careful to veer on just the right side of the law. He has attempted to become the acceptable face of the BNP, steering clear of outright legal breaches and overt anti-social behaviour. His most unpleasant views have been given a glossy PR finish in order to make them palatable (or at least as palatable as such views can actually be) to the largest possible audience of morons. Meanwhile, he has saved the true nadir of his bile for the BNP’s core following. Previously, this is where he’s been caught out and garnered criminal charges, firstly in 1998 for his Holocaust-denying writings in the largely underground right-wing publication The Rune, and then again in 2004 for a secretly filmed speech lambasting Muslims, which he gave at a meeting for the Burnley branch of the party. On both occasions the material was not intended for wide-spread consumption.

It’s tempting, therefore, to speculate about why he would so blatantly and unwisely breach incitement laws on Twitter; that most public of forums and abandon his sanitized public face. Even going so far as to publish a private address and promising that BNP followers will bring the pair, who are amateur actors, “a bit of drama”.

Perhaps his actions can be traced to the persistent rumours of closet homosexuality that have plagued Griffin’s political career, embarrassing him in front of his fascist friends. Apart from former National Front leader Martin Webster that is, who claims to have had a four year relationship with the younger Nick, beginning when Griffin was 16 and was a frequent guest of Webster’s at his swanky London bachelor pad.

Griffin denies the rumours. Sure, he went to a public boys’ school, frequent hotbeds of homosexual hi-jinx; and sure he now chooses to surround himself with tall, butch, skin-headed, bulging-biceped bodyguards; and sure he has a relentless obsession with peoples’ personal appearances, apparently preferring his boys blond, blue-eyed and pale, but to read to much into that would perhaps be presumptous.

Griffin’s specific complaint about the court victory is the same bizarre Catch-22 yarn recently spun by Anne Widdecombe; that by stopping Christians from infringing the rights of homosexuals, we are infringing the rights of Christians. Griffin has uselessly coined this ‘heterophobia’. Ignoring the real problem people have with him, which has nothing whatsoever to do with his race, religion or sexuality, but more to do with the fact he’s a pig-ignorant, self-loathing, loathsome, mind-numbingly tedious cretin.

Another possible explanation for his latest outburst is that Griffin’s public profile has been noticeably non-existent recently. The BNP is in the financial pits, and, as seen in this year’s Channel 4 documentary about him made by Keith Allen, even Griffin’s supporters are no longer singing his praises the way they once were, many complaining he isn’t unpleasant enough to truly represent their views. Now that’s one hell of a claim.
